What Technology and Banking Experts Think About the Tool to be Implemented in the EU

Bucharest, April 10th, 2025
On Tuesday, April 8th, IT Smart Systems and Ping Identity organized a debate in Romania dedicated to the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet), under the title “The Future of Trust: Digital Identity Wallets”. Hosted at the Marmorosch Hotel in Bucharest, the event brought together experts from banking, telecommunications, retail, and technology, who discussed the impact of this new digital tool, which is set to be implemented across all EU member states starting next year. By November 2026 at the latest, every EU country will be required to make the digital wallet available to citizens, residents, and businesses.
Moderated by Irina Vijoli, Founding Partner of DigiQuery, the discussion featured Andrei Dumitru (IT Smart Systems), David Baier and Mate Bàràny (Ping Identity), Aida Enache (BRD), Gabriel Herbei (First Bank), and Valentina Dragomir (Evrotrust).
The European Digital Identity Wallet is a free, secure, and optional digital application allowing EU citizens to store and use official documents directly from their mobile phones. These documents fall into three main categories: PID / LPID (Personal Identification Data) - personal identification information issued only by the state, such as identity cards, driver’s licenses, or other official documents; QEAA (Qualified Electronic Attestations of Attributes) - qualified digital attestations such as power of attorney, qualified digital signature, or company administrator status; and EAA (Electronic Attestations of Attributes) - documents or information associated with rights or benefits, such as loyalty cards, airline or train tickets, public transport subscriptions, or event access.
The European Digital Identity Wallet is designed to provide EU citizens with a simpler, more secure, and reusable way to verify their identity online. It represents a major opportunity - not only for accessing public services but also for streamlining interactions with private sector services - by accelerating processes and reducing the costs associated with digital identity verification, stated Andrei Dumitru, Executive Partner at IT Smart Systems, during the event.
With the help of the European Digital Identity Wallet, service providers will be able to access verified information with a high level of trust, enabling them to deliver digital services quickly, in a transparent manner, and with the clear consent of users, he added.
The wallet will allow users to access a wide range of services more quickly and easily - such as opening a bank account, activating a subscription, or verifying their identity within an app - without needing passwords, document copies, or physical presence.
David Baier, Senior Engineer at Ping Identity, emphasized the economic potential of decentralized identity:
Decentralized digital identity not only offers enhanced security and control for users but also creates real monetization opportunities for providers. New revenue streams will arise through the issuance and validation of credentials, bringing direct benefits to industries such as retail, telecommunications, and transportation. This is a crucial moment to develop a sustainable and profitable digital ecosystem.
Under European regulation, all EU member states will be required to provide citizens and residents with access to a European Digital Identity Wallet by November 2026. This wallet can be provided either through a state-developed application or via accredited private providers that meet common security and interoperability standards.
Specific categories of organizations will be required to accept the European Digital Identity Wallet as a valid form of digital identification when interacting with users and customers. To meet this requirement, service providers must upgrade their security infrastructure to verify and accept digital credentials issued through the wallet - at a minimum, acting as authorized verifiers. IT Smart Systems and Ping Identity provide innovative solutions that enable service providers to fast-track the adoption of new security standards and achieve compliance with European regulations for the Digital Identity Wallet.
The Digital Wallet aligns with our customers’ expectations precisely, offering them ease of use, speed, and control over their personal data. It’s a tool that will significantly transform the way users interact in the digital space,” said Aida Enache, Executive Director of Retail Digital Transformation at BRD Groupe Société Générale.
Gabriel Herbei, CTO of First Bank, emphasized the broader potential of the digital wallet:
This tool will not only impact the banking sector but will also unlock opportunities in healthcare, education, and many other areas, paving the way for a connected digital ecosystem.
The European Digital Identity Wallet is considered
an innovation in itself, as it enables secure access to digital services, said Valentina Dragomir, Country Manager at Evrotrust.
The new tool to be implemented at the EU level brings many benefits but also generates emotion among experts.
Digital identities allow us to move beyond passwords. It’s truly a time of transition - filled with excitement, but also some uncertainty and disruption in the market, which is only natural”, said Mate Bàràny, Strategic Accounts Executive at Ping Identity.
The European Digital Identity Wallet represents a pivotal shift in how citizens and businesses interact within the digital landscape of the European Union. The event, hosted by IT Smart Systems and Ping Identity, sparked an important conversation about this inevitable future and laid the groundwork for continued dialogue at the intersection of technology, regulation, and industry.
